VISX STAR® S4

The VISX STAR S4 is a product of the company that pioneered the development of excimer laser systems. This laser requires a shorter procedure time and contains sophisticated eye tracking capabilities. The ActiveTrak™ 3-D Active Eye Tracking can capture all three dimensions of intra-operative eye movements without dilation of the pupils. One benefit of the VISX laser is that it produces the smoothest surface on the cornea after the procedure, which promotes faster healing, resulting in better vision. The Star S4 laser is FDA approved to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

The 3D ActiveTrak EyeTracker tracks the horizontal, vertical and up and down motion of the eye in real time. This allows for extra safety and precision during the LASIK procedure by verifying the correct position of your eye before every laser pulse. With the ActiveTrak system, no pre-imaging or dilation is required and it allows us full control of centration and engagement.

CustomVue® iLASIK

With the introduction of Wavefront mapping technology, Dr. Christenbury can now further customize the treatment options for every patient. The new WaveScan® technology developed by VISX can detect higher-order aberrations that have gone previously undetected. Halos, poor night vision and overall quality of vision is improved.

The resulting diagnostic information is converted to a Wavefront Map and this individualized treatment information is transferred directly to the laser. The Wavefront Map guides the treatment, resulting in a Wavefront Customized iLASIK procedure.

The VISX CustomVue system is approved to treat both farsightedness and nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism. This makes the VISX CustomVue procedure the first U.S. approved WaveFront Customized iLASIK treatment for hyperopia. The specific approvals for WaveFront-guided iLASIK are as follows. For the reduction or elimination of myopic astigmatism up to -6.00 MRSE, with cylinder between 0.00 and -3.00 D and for correction of hyperopia with or without astigmatism up to +3.00D MRSE, with cylinder up to +2.00D.

Clinical Studies

The results of the FDA’s clinical study on visual acuity show that 6 months after the VISX CustomVue procedure:

100% of patients could pass a driving test without glasses or contacts
98% achieved 20/20 or better
70% were 20/16 or better

Overall, many patients were pleased with their quality of vision, with four times as many patients satisfied with their night vision when compared to wearing their glasses or contacts. 98% of patients who undergo WaveFront Customized iLASIK at Christenbury Eye Center achieve 20/20 vision or better!
