Catalys Laser for Cataract Surgery
Christenbury Eye Center is the first eye clinic in the Carolinas to offer the Catalys® Precision Laser System from OptiMedica®, a laser specifically designed for laser-assisted cataract surgery. The Catalys laser is a state-of-the-art femtosecond (one millionth of a nanosecond 10 -15) laser that offers patients a more comfortable, custom surgery with an unprecedented level of accuracy.
The Catalys Precision Laser System combines this amazingly fast laser with 3D optical imaging. Laser cataract surgery has unique safety aspects, is more accurate, precise, and more reproducible than a manual method. The benefits of including this new laser in cataract surgery include:
The Catalys laser used for cataract surgery employs a similar technology to the femtosecond laser used in LASIK surgery for vision correction. This new laser is used during technically challenging steps in cataract surgery that were previously handled manually by the surgeon. The Catalys laser delivers more stable and consistent incisions in several steps of cataract surgery – the first incisions in the cornea, creation of the opening in the lens capsule perfectly centered in the pupil and the initial breaking up of the old lens.
