Understanding Custom Wavefront LASIK Surgery
Custom Wavefront LASIK surgery corrects or greatly improves three common refractive errors in vision:
In each of these conditions, light entering the eye through the lens fails to focus properly on the retina. The result is blurred vision. LASIK surgery reshapes the cornea to restore good eyesight, eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.
A leader in laser eye surgery in Charlotte, NC, Christenbury Eye Center is the first vision care facility in the Carolinas to offer the new VisuMax laser for LASIK, combined with our custom VisX vision correction technology. This revolutionary all-laser, all-computer approach to LASIK surgery results in a faster and more comfortable procedure.
Are you a Candidate?
During your initial free LASIK screening, we will thoroughly examine your eyes and perform comprehensive testing to make sure that Custom Wavefront LASIK, also known as iLASIK, is the right procedure for you. iLASIK combines 3D Wavefront mapping and IntraLase technology to provide the highest quality LASIK procedure. After taking your medical and eye history, we will perform the tests listed below:
Once the pre-operative testing is complete, you will be taken to an exam room and shown a video about the LASIK procedure that highlights the benefits of the iLASIK approach. Then, Dr. Christenbury will meet with you to answer your questions, address your concerns and review the risks and benefits of LASIK surgery with you. Our exclusive custom wavefront technology will assist Dr. Christenbury in tailoring the treatment to give you the best possible results: 20/20 or better. Afterward, your consultation with Dr. Christenbury, you will meet with a surgery counselor to discuss fees and scheduling.
iLASIK Surgery Is A Two-Step Process
To gain access to the inner eye, the surgeon creates a tiny, hinged-flap in the surface of the cornea. Instead of a surgical blade, the Christenbury Eye Center utilizes a new state-of-the-art laser, the Zeiss VisuMax® Femtosecond Laser to create the flap. By eliminating the surgical blade, the VisuMax significantly improves the accuracy and precision of the creation of the flap, and greatly reduces the risk of infections and complications.
The VisuMax is the fastest vision correction in the world, pulsing 500,000 times a second. The exceptional speed and accuracy of VisuMax allows a cool laser light to pass through the corneal surface straight to the exact computer-programmed location within the eye, without damaging exterior eye tissue.
To complete the LASIK surgery, the surgeon lifts the corneal flap and the actual laser vision correction is performed with one of our FDA-approved VisX excimer lasers. The cornea is gently reshaped according to the surgeon’s specifications for accurate vision correction.
What to Expect During LASIK Surgery
iLASIK is painless and fast – the creation of the flap takes about 30 seconds for each eye. You will receive a mild sedative to help you relax, but you will remain alert and comfortable during the procedure.
Before the procedure, antibiotic drops and a topical anesthetic will be applied to numb the eyes. You will then be moved to the vision correction laser. A special instrument, called a lid speculum, will keep the operative eye open during the procedure. The other eye will be taped shut. A sterile patient packet is used to interface the operative eye with the VisuMax. Because the Visumax laser is completely pre-programmed and computer-controlled, any one of our team of board-certified ophthalmologists may create the flap. You will then be moved under the VisX laser, where Dr. Christenbury will lift the flap and perform the actual vision correction procedure with the VisX laser. The actual vision correction takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes.
Before leaving our office, we will review all post-op medications and a doctor will check your eyes to ensure good flap position and answer any questions you may have.
Precautions After LASIK Surgery
Once the LASIK surgery is completed, patients are advised to go home and rest, keeping their eyes closed as much as possible for the rest of the day. It is very important not to rub or squeeze your eyes shut for 1 month following your procedure. You will be given a prescription for antibiotic medication and lubricating eye drops. Protective eyewear should be worn for several days: eye shields when you are resting or sleeping and sunglasses when you’re awake. Activities that strain the eyes – reading, watching television and working at the computer – should be kept to a minimum. You will have a follow-up appointment the day after surgery.
After LASIK surgery, you may experience mild side effects, including tearing, sensitivity to bright lights and a feeling of “scratchiness”. In addition, your vision may be somewhat hazy at first. These side effects should disappear within a few days and you can get back to your normal activities with dramatically improved vision!
