Keeping with the tradition of constant development and technological growth in the field of visual enhancement, Dr. Jonathan Christenbury of Christenbury Eye Center now utilizes an amazing breakthrough in laser vision correction, the FDA-approved VISX Iris Registration Technology. This new method of precisely aligning the laser with the eye provides increased accuracy as a component to the already successful VISX CustomVue wavefront-guided laser vision correction procedure.

“Proper alignment is crucial to a successful wavefront-guided procedure,” Dr. Christenbury said. In the past, methods of alignment normally involved the surgeon manually creating ink marks on the white part of the eye. If the pupil shifted during the procedure, Dr. Christenbury would manually move the patient’s head to compensate. The Iris Registration Technology is the only fully automated, computer-controlled method of alignment, creating a more accurate procedure.

How VISX Iris Registration Technology Works

During a laser vision correction procedure, the pupil normally shifts as much as seven degrees between the patient sitting at the WaveScan system and lying on the treatment bed. With Iris Registration Technology, each eye is measured by recording various locations and angles while the patient is seated and again while lying down, and the eye is never touched. These measurements are then used to maintain proper alignment throughout the procedure.

Iris Recognition Technology is not time-intensive like manual alignment methods. The eye can be realigned if eye moves or the procedure is paused. Iris Recognition Technology also serves as a safeguard in that once the eye is measured, the measurement is assigned specifically to that eye. Therefore, it is impossible to mix measurements and treat the wrong eye.
