The Traditional Method

The LASIK procedure is actually a 2-step procedure where the first step requires the creation of a flap of tissue in the cornea. The flap is then lifted and an excimer laser is used to remove tissue in a specific pattern to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. In traditional LASIK surgery, the surgeon uses a mechanical microkeratome with a surgical blade to cut a tiny-hinged flap of tissue from the cornea. The microkeratome was introduced over 15 years ago and has seen little advancement in its design since that time. Although Christenbury Eye Center’s record of success is excellent with this traditional method (over 50,000 performed), as with any surgical procedure, there is always the potential for inconsistent in results and infection.

iLASIK - The Future of Vision Correction

IntraLase Facts Now, the most advanced technique uses an FDA-approved, computer-controlled laser designed specifically for the creation of the cornea flap. This new technique, called iLASIK, uses 2 lasers to perform the procedure, providing an entirely new level of safety and precision in vision correction. While the iLASIK procedure continues to require a corneal flap, it is created with the IntraLase FS - a special rapid pulse laser called a femtosecond laser. The corneal flap is then lifted and 1 of our 5 FDA-approved excimer lasers is used to perform the actual vision correction.

Three Key Advantages

1) Instead of using a mechanical microkeratome, iLASIK uses a high-tech femtosecond (FS) pulsed laser to create the corneal flap. With iLASIK, only the laser touches the eye. The result is a more precise cornea resection, greater consistency of flap thickness and reduced potential for infection or complication. In addition, when the flap is replaced once the procedure is complete, the tissue “reseats” with a tighter seal. (No stitches are used).

2) All LASIK procedures require the eye to be immobilized with a suction ring while the flap is produced, which creates a build-up of pressure on the eye. While the mechanical microkeratome places a substantial amount of pressure on the eye, the iLASIK procedure allows the eye to remain at a level as close to normal as possible, increasing patient comfort and safety.

3) iLASIK is gentle to the eye. During corneal re-shaping, the long wavelength of the FS laser allows the beam to pass completely through the outer tissue of the eye without heating or damaging any healthy surface area. In a process called photo disruption, the IntraLase FS uses microscopic bubbles of carbon dioxide and water vapor to create precise corneal flaps.
