“Our patients say that the quality of vision at night is better with Custom Vision LASIK than with glasses and contacts.”

Dr. Jonathan Christenbury First in Carolinas to Offer New Visian ICL for Nearsightedness
Permanent “Contact Lens” Inside the Eye
For Immediate Release
Millions of Americans with common vision errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism have more choices than ever before for improving their eyesight.
Now there is yet another exciting new alternative for people who are very nearsighted.
In February, Dr. Jonathan Christenbury of the Christenbury Eye Center will be the first in the Carolinas to introduce the Visian ICL®, a unique implantable collamer intraocular lens that corrects nearsightedness, a condition affecting 1 in 4 people in the U.S.
Think of the Visian ICL as a contact lens inside the eye, but better, because it is permanent and will never dry out, become dirty, get lost or need to be re-inserted in the eye each morning. This type of intra-ocular lens is a Phakic IOL.
“We are pleased to offer patients one more advanced technology that will make a difference in their eyesight and their quality of life,” says Dr. Christenbury, who is known for his pioneering work in new vision care treatments, including WaveFront Custom iLASIK and the ReSTOR procedure that eliminates the need for reading glasses or bifocals.
The Visian ICL is designed to correct moderate to severe nearsightedness and offers people who were not good candidates for laser vision correction the freedom from having to wear glasses and contact lenses. The Visian is also ideal for patients who might be LASIK candidates but prefer a reversible procedure.
Staar Surgical received FDA approval for the Visian ICL in December 2005. Clinical results of a national study were excellent, with 94.7% of patients achieving eyesight of 20/40 or better without glasses or contact lenses, which allows them to drive a car without wearing corrective eyewear. More than 92% of patients said they were very or extremely satisfied with the improvement to their eyesight. The implantable lens is now available in the U.S. and Europe through selected eye surgeons. It has been successfully implanted in more than 45,000 eyes worldwide.
Intraocular lenses have been used successfully for many years with cataract surgery. But unlike cataract surgery, where the damaged lens is removed and replaced with a new artificial one, with the Visian ICL, the natural lens remains in place.
During the procedure, the Visian ICL is placed inside the eye in front of the natural lens. It is inserted behind the iris, the colored part of the eye, so it remains virtually undetectable except during an eye exam. However, should it ever become medically necessary, the ICL can be removed or replaced at any time in the future.
The lens is made of Collamer, a proprietary material composed of pure collagen that is biocompatible with the body, gentle on the eye and very stable. An innovative foldable design allows the eye surgeon to make a very tiny incision about 3 mm. in diameter that does not require stitches.
Nearsightedness, also called myopia, causes blurred vision and makes it difficult to see objects at a distance. That’s because light coming into the eye focuses incorrectly in front of the retina rather than on the back of the eye. The Visian ICL’s function is to focus light properly on the retina.
Candidates for Visian ICL must be between the ages of 21 and 45 with a stable refraction, meet the medical criteria and understand the risks of surgery for nearsightedness.
“The Visian ICL is an exciting new technology that is safe and effective,” says Dr. Christenbury. “It will allow people who are very nearsighted to enjoy the freedom of clear vision without relying on glasses or contact lenses.”
