Corneal & Orbital Surgery

The cornea is the smooth, clear tissue at the very front of the eye that covers the iris (the colored part of the eye) and pupil. If the cornea is damaged from infection, an inherited disease or an accident, it may cause your vision to be cloudy and blurred. When medication is not effective, corneal surgery or a corneal transplant may be the answer to restore vision.

Corneal transplants are one of many “same day surgery” procedures offered at the Christenbury Eye Center. Experienced surgeons perform the procedure with excellent results. You will receive local anesthesia and sedation to make you comfortable while the surgeon removes the damaged cornea and replaces it with healthy donor tissue.

Within a few days, most people can resume normal activities, but protective glasses are often worn for several weeks while the eye heals. Steroid eye drops help prevent rejection of the new corneal tissue. Clear vision returns with in a short period of time, but complete healing from the transplant may take time, often three months to one year.
