Bioptics Offers Patients with Complex Vision Better Results Using Both a Cornea Surgeon and a Refractive Surgeon May Improve Vision Results with Bioptics Treatment

Charlotte N.C., July 28, 2015 – Some laser vision correction centers across the U.S. offer a service called “Bioptics refractive surgery.” This two-procedure process offers a much better outcome than traditional, single-surgery procedures for certain patients. Bioptics is often offered to patients with complex conditions such as, Myopia combined with Kerataconus, or extreme Myopia combined with Astigmatism. This process is not offered by all vision correction centers because many centers do not have a cornea surgeon on staff. Only surgeons trained in both cornea surgery and lens surgery or centers with both cornea and lens surgeons may provide these extra benefits and better results than traditional refractive surgery centers.

Bioptics is a two-surgery procedure performed on patients presenting with one of the following complex conditions:

  1. Patients with Presbyopia (loss of ability to see up close over age of 40) combined with astigmatism (imperfection in the curvature of the eye): The Bioptics treatment for this complex condition includes a Multifocal lens (TECNIS) implant, then a follow-up LASIK procedure to remove the astigmatism. The second procedure is normally performed about one month after the first surgery. Patients often achieve 20/20 vision results for reading, intermediate and distance.
  2. Patients who present with myopia (nearsightedness under 40) and keratoconus (thinning of the cornea) who are not candidates for LASIK: The Bioptics solution includes cornea correction with a procedure called Intacs Prescription Inserts. A ring that stabilizes the cornea is inserted into the eye to flatten the cornea, thus stabilizing the cornea and eliminating the need for a cornea transplant. About one month later, a vision correction procedure for myopia including a Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (Visian ICL) is performed. In this scenario, a patient with worst possible vision may achieve vision results of 20/20 to 20/40 vision without glasses. (A value of 20/40 is adequate to pass a driving test.)
  3. Patients with extremely high levels of myopia or nearsightedness: These patient does not qualify for LASIK alone, and a Visian ICL implant will restore vision up to -16 units in power. If a patient presents with -19 units, for example, a Visian ICL implant will restore up to -16 units. Then, in a second procedure about one month later, LASIK surgery may easily restore the last -3 units to get this patient to 20/20.

People with extremely poor vision and the complex situations listed above benefit from working with a laser vision correction center offering Bioptics solutions. Patients should check with their local eye care centers for more information.
