“Our patients say that the quality of vision at night is better with Custom Vision LASIK than with glasses and contacts.”

Charlotte, NC April 30, 2013
In March, 2013, Dr. Jonathan Christenbury performed 25 successful cataract surgeries for patients who are less fortunate in Granada, Nicaragua, as a participant in and sponsor of a mission led by the Order of Malta and its directors, Dr. Frank Schmidt, Cardiovascular Surgeon and Dr. Robert Cangelosi, Ophthalmologist. The trip, partially funded by Christenbury Eye Center and several US-based ophthalmic vendors, consisted of a team of 25 surgeons, physicians, nurses, technicians, a chaplain and several other assistants who spent an entire week during March donating their talents to perform the vision-saving surgeries.
The yearly mission is part of an effort by the Archdiocese of New Orleans that began almost 20 years ago designed to send several medical missions a year to Nicaragua. The annual mission is sponsored by the Order of Malta through grants to purchase medicines and supplies and transportation expenses for the nurses, technicians and residents or students on the mission.
Nicaragua is one the poorest countries in Central America and the second poorest in the Northern Hemisphere with widespread underemployment, hunger and poverty. With such devastating levels of poverty, healthcare is often compromised in the city of Granada and its surrounding townships.
“My goal in going to Nicaragua was to use my skills and experience in eye surgery to help people who otherwise had absolutely no access to cataract surgery for vision restoration,” says Dr. Christenbury. He goes on to say, “I was emotionally moved to see patients who could barely function due to advanced cataracts, have their vision restored.”
One 80-year-old woman was nearly blind for 20 years, and for the past 10 years could only tell day from night due to the most severe cataracts seen by Dr. Christenbury. The next day she was ecstatic and wanted to cook dinner for everyone at home and she could finally see her grandchild for the first time.
The mission group was comprised of 25 people, including 10 to 12 physicians and surgeons. During the week-long trip, nurses, technicians, a chaplain and several helpers assisted in the treatment of patients of various ages and medical challenges. Dr. Christenbury and three members of his staff spent the week operating in the Hospital Amistad Japón-Nicaragua. The facility offered limited resources, but an endless amount of satisfaction for their doctor and his staff knowing that so many in need were helped by this generous effort.
