“Our patients say that the quality of vision at night is better with Custom Vision LASIK than with glasses and contacts.”

Christenbury Eye Center Now Delivers Laser Cataract Surgery with the Catalys Precision Laser System
Cataract Surgery Just Got Safer and Easier with This Latest New Technology
Charlotte N.C., February 25, 2013 – Christenbury Eye Center, a premier laser eye clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina, announces the arrival of the Catalys™ Precision Laser System by OptiMedica® Corporation for laser-assisted cataract surgery. The Catalys laser combines a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser, 3D imaging and sophisticated software to help the surgeon provide patients a comfortable, custom surgery with the highest level of accuracy. Patients who choose this procedure experience faster healing times, a potentially lower risk of infection and improved visual results over traditional cataract surgery.
The arrival of this new laser makes Christenbury Eye Center the first eye clinic in North and South Carolina to provide the Catalys laser onsite for laser cataract surgery. With the Catalys laser, patients experience many benefits, including:
The Catalys laser is similar to the femtosecond laser technology used in LASIK laser vision correction. This new laser replaces the most technically demanding steps in cataract surgery that previously were performed manually. The Catalys laser provides more stable and consistent treatment in several steps of cataract surgery – the initial incisions in the cornea, creation of the opening in the lens capsule perfectly centered in the pupil and the laser fragmentation of the cataract.
“The precision of the Catalys laser allows more perfect centration of the intra-ocular lens,” says Dr. Christenbury.
“We always strive to bring the latest technology to our patients. The addition of the Catalys laser will deliver more accurate results with faster recovery times,” Dr. Christenbury said. “Since astigmatism is corrected simultaneously, most patients do not require distance spectacle correction to drive. If the Catalys laser cataract surgery is combined with the ReSTOR® intra-ocular lens, reading glasses can be eliminated after cataract surgery.”
Cataracts are present in 22 million people over age 40, and 31 million by 2020. Cataract surgery is the most common outpatient procedure in the U.S. They occur when the lens becomes cloudy with age, first affecting night vision, and then causing daytime blurry vision, often not helped with spectacle change. The only cure for cataracts is replacement of the cloudy lens with an artificial lens. Traditionally, this procedure is a manual process, and, therefore, the reason the incorporation of the Catalys laser greatly improves the accuracy of this procedure.
The Catalys Precision Laser System was developed by OptiMedica Corporation in Silicon Valley, California. The technology was developed in close collaboration with a Medical Advisory Board of cataract experts from around the world. OptiMedica was recently granted a fundamental patent for Laser Cataract Surgery by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, effective March 12, 2013.
It’s no surprise that Dr. Jonathan Christenbury is on the forefront of laser eye technology as he performed the first LASIK surgery in the Carolinas and more than 75,000 LASIK surgeries in the past 15 years and 10,000 cataract procedures over 25 years. He continues to adopt the latest and most advanced technologies.
Dr. Christenbury was recently interviewed during a filming by the Discovery Channel, and he and the practice will be featured in an upcoming show expected to air in Spring, 2013.
