“Our patients say that the quality of vision at night is better with Custom Vision LASIK than with glasses and contacts.”
– Jonathan Christenbury, M.D.
Christenbury Eye Center Supports Underserved Communities From North Carolina to Central America with LASIK and Cataract Surgeries and Cash Donations
Fifty-Four LASIK and Cataract Procedures and more than $7,000 Donated to Help Those in Need
Charlotte N.C., January 7, 2014 – For more than 25 years, Christenbury Eye Center has worked to restore vision in more than 140,000 eyes. The doctors at Christenbury Eye Center support the Charlotte community and the world at large. Each year, the Center helps those in need by offering free LASIK and cataract surgeries, along with monetary donations to agencies that support underserved communities. In fact, Christenbury Eye Center worked far above and beyond in 2013 to help needy individuals and families. Here’s a sampling of the Center’s generosity:
Christenbury Eye Center donated nine (9) LASIK eye surgeries to various non-profits as auction items that raised more than $15,000. Non-profits supported included local organizations, such as:
— Project 2 Heal, Leroy Fox, benefitting Susan G. Komen of Charlotte
And also national organizations, such as:
— St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital
Dr. Christenbury also provided monetary donations to the Salvation Army and Cops for Kids.
This year, continuing a Christenbury Eye Center tradition, a $3600 donation to the Salvation Army Center of Hope in Greater Charlotte paid for a family of five to move into a new apartment with paid rent and utilities for six months. Without the help of Christenbury Eye Center, this family may have returned to living in their car, as the Salvation Army’s temporary housing fund that paid for their hotel room would soon dry up. With the freezing harsh weather in Charlotte, this donation is a timely blessing that allows this family to keep warm.
Dr. Christenbury says, “We’re proud to support this amazing effort to help families regain their independence.” Each year, approximately 350 individuals and families are helped at the Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte’s Center of Hope.
In 2013, Dr. Christenbury and Dr. Casey Mathys traveled to Nicaragua and Honduras, respectively. Each of their missions included free cataract surgeries to the severely sight-impaired and most in need in these countries. A total of 45 surgeries were performed to restore their vision. Christenbury Eye Center donated both services and supplies for these missions.
You might ask how the Center functions with all this philanthropy going on? Dr. Christenbury’s employees help by staffing tables at the various community events and attending various fundraiser events. The doctors traveled on mission for one week (not the same week) and were able to support each other while one was absent.
